Foundations of Artificial Intelligence Agents

A graduate-level lecture series that traces the full arc of modern artificial intelligence — from the foundational mechanics of large language models to the frontier questions of AGI, reasoning, planning, and embodied robotics. The course is designed for researchers, practitioners, and advanced students who want both theoretical grounding and practical understanding of where AI stands today and where it is heading.

The series is delivered as recorded public lectures, most running between 50 and 65 minutes, with occasional lightning talks for focused topics. The lectures draw directly from the Foundations of Artificial Intelligence Agents books, making the course a living companion to the published work.

Syllabus

13 modules, from LLMs to AGI

Module 01

Large Language Models as Research Tools

Grounds students in what LLMs actually are and what they can do, anchored in real scientific use cases across bioinformatics, chemistry, physics, and the social sciences — and honest about their limitations.

Module 02

Evaluating Intelligence: How Do We Know When AI Is Smart?

Introduces the evaluation ecosystem — benchmarks, the Turing Test, and proposed successor tests for measuring AGI-level performance.

Module 03

AI’s Real-World Impact: Nobel Prizes and Beyond

Uses the landmark 2024 Nobel Prizes in Physics and Chemistry to show that AI is no longer just a tool for science but a driver of scientific discovery.

Module 04

The Reasoning Problem

LLMs appear to reason, but do they? Examines MMLU, CommonsenseQA, and the AI2 Reasoning Challenge, and the real power and limits of Chain-of-Thought.

Module 05

The Planning Problem

A related but distinct question: can LLMs break down goals and sequence actions toward them?

Module 06

Reinforcement Learning and the Emergence of Reasoning Models

The methodological heart of the course: DeepSeek-R1, five transferable lessons from its success, and how RL evolved from value optimization to the centre of frontier reasoning models.

Module 07

Scaling: How Size, Data, and Compute Shape Intelligence

Classical pre-training scaling laws and the frontier concept of test-time scaling — allocating more compute during inference rather than training.

Module 08

AI Creativity and Scientific Discovery

Not whether AI can assist scientists, but whether it can be one — and whether current systems are truly creative or sophisticated recombination engines.

Module 09

Deep Research: AI as Knowledge Worker

AI that autonomously conducts extended, multi-step research tasks: current offerings, evaluation benchmarks, potential and limitations.

Module 10

AI-Assisted Coding and Vibe Coding

Coding models, their training and benchmarks, and what directing AI through natural-language intent means for software engineering as a profession.

Module 11

Embodied Intelligence: Robotics and Vision-Language-Action Models

The course’s most-watched lecture: from hand-coded robot behaviours to VLA models that unite perception, language, and physical action.

Module 12

The AGI Question Revisited

Drawing on Hinton, Bengio, LeCun, Fei-Fei Li, and Sutton: competing definitions of AGI, the major architectural approaches, and what remains genuinely unsolved.

Module 13

Neuro-Symbolic AI: Bridging Pattern and Logic

Systems that combine the pattern recognition of deep learning with the logical rigour of symbolic AI — perhaps the most promising path to robust, interpretable intelligence.
